Hot Ginger was formed in 2009 by Stephen Badham and Andy Conway who saw a gap in the market for high energy vintage swing dance and fashion nights in Birmingham, UK. They ran their first event in October that year and followed it up with over 20 events until Andy decided to part ways in 2014.
Stephen now runs Hot Ginger with his wife and dance partner, Kerstin Treder. Stephen and Kerstin are very active members of the international Balboa community and have studied and taught the dance together since 2011. They have attended multiple international Balboa workshops at Invitational level with teachers including Sylvia Sykes, Nick Williams, Kelly Arsenault, Mickey Fortanasce, Bobby White, Kate Hedin, David Rhem, Mette Herlitz, Jeremy Otth, Laura Keat and Andreas Olsson, to name a few. They have also competed in a number of Balboa competitions and have made finals or placed in the top three at events such as California Balboa Classic, All Balboa Weekend, Thames Valley Balboa Festival, Edinburgh Balboa Exchange and The Scoot, Galway. They recently took 1st place at Thames Valley Balboa Festival's Classic Competition.
Stephen and Kerstin are active members of the peer-to-peer practice forum, The Pilot, which is organised and run by Mel and Jo Calanglang. In 2014 and 2016, they attended the invitational residential Balboa workshop, The Balboa Experiment.
Whilst not currently teaching weekly, Stephen currently runs dance workshops and practice sessions in Birmingham and beyond with Balboa extraordinaire Lynn Maslen .
